Reading Notes: Ramayana, Part B
Reading Notes:
- Manthara poisoned Kaikeyi's mind. Rama was sent into exile, and Bharata was made king.
- Urmila stayed back.
- Urmila slept for 14 years for both her and her husband while Lakshmana kept awake.
- Dasharatha died as he was grief-stricken.
- Bharata and Shatrughna were angry, and Manthara and Keikeyi.
- Bharata begged Rama to come back and be their king.
- Bharata ruled but as a regent only.
- Rama and Lakshmana freed Tumburu (a Gandharva) from a curse where they had to live as a rakshasa.
- Ilvala and Vitapi: two rakshasa brothers. Ilvala would disguise himself as a brahmin and invite other brahmins for dinner. Vitapi would shapeshift into a sheep which was served as food. Later Ilvala would ask his brother to come out and Vitapi would come out bursting the stomaches of these brahmins. Agastya (rishi) defeated them.
- Agastya gave Rama various weapons: a diamond-studded bow made of gold made by Vishvakarma, two inexhaustible quivers, a sword that once belonged to Indra, and a bow that once belonged to Vishnu.
- Indra lured Lakshmana to kill an ascetic who was meditating to kill Indra.
- Anasuya, wife of rishi Atri, let Brahma, Vishnu and, Shiva suckle. She gave Sita a garment that always stays clean, a garland that stays ever-fresh, and a cream to make her skin ever-soft.
- Lakshmana jumped into the fire to prove he is faithful to Urmila.
- Lakshmana chopped Shurpanakha's ears and nose as she was attacking Sita.
- Ravana decides to kidnap Sita.
- Maricha (son of Tataka) became the golden dear to help Ravana kidnap Sita.
- Rama went to catch the deer. Lakshamana and Sita hear Rama shouting for help. Sita made Lakshmana go look for Rama. Lakshamana drew a line and asked Sita to not cross it.
- Ravana came as an ascetic to ask for food from Sita. Sita was captured.
- Jatayu tried to fight Ravana but ended up wounded.
- Sita resided in ashoka grove.
