Reading Notes: Epified Krishna, Part A
The Birth of Krishna
(by Nanda Lal Bose, from Myths of the Hindus and Buddhists, 1914)
Reading Notes:
- Devaki's cousin Kamsa put her, and her husband, in jail as it was foretold that Devaki's 8th child will kill Kamsa.
- Devaki's 7th child was transported into the womb of Rohini (Vasudeva's other wife.)
- When the 8th child, Krishna, was born- everyone slept. The prison doors unlocked themselves. Vasudeva walked out with Krishna and left the child with Nanda's wife, Yashoda, who had also given birth.
- Putana came to visit Krishna. One night, Putana became a demoness and fed Krishna poisonous milk, but Krishna also sucked the powers and life out of her. Putana died.
- Yashoda saw the universe inside Krishna's mouth. Just like Rama's mother did with Rama.
- Krishna danced on top of Kaliya the poisonous snake. The dance looked like Tandav.
